Even In Disaster You’re Still Good God

“You who have made me see many troubles and calamities will revive me again; from the depths of the earth you will bring me up again. You will increase my greatness and comfort me again.” - Psalm 71:20-21

Disaster is certainly not what anyone wants to go through, but unfortunately in this world disaster is often a part of life. Even now I am finding it hard to write this post, as many people across my country are continuing to live through the wake of disaster. It is hard to hear the stories about the people who have lost everything from the flooding rains of Helene, and the destruction of Milton. Two storms that will go down in the record books for their calamities.

Seeing natural disasters strike communities all around the world is heartbreaking. When personally faced with disaster it can leave us questioning God. Often wondering why God would let bad things happen to good people. While this is certainly not an easy question to answer, I know of a man who suffered great losses in disaster, and still chose to say ‘blessed be the name of the LORD.’. You can read this man’s story of disaster and unwavering faith in God in the book of Job.

Oh to have the faith of Job, to bless God in the face of disaster and not to sin or charge God with wrong. I’ll be the first to confess that this would be difficult for me. How easy it would be for me to be mad at God after suffering great loss. Yet, through all the suffering Job did not curse God. Spoiler alert, at the end of the book of Job the Bible says that ‘the LORD blessed the latter days of Job more than his beginning.’. Job’s faithfulness and fear in God carried him through the suffering, and to the later blessings that God had for his life.

LORD, I pray that we may never have to face disasters like Job did, but even if everything is torn from our lives, give us the faith and strength to say, ‘The LORD gave, and the LORD has taken away; blessed be the name of the LORD.’. Remind us in the face of personal tragedies, that you are still God over everything, and even though the pain and suffering may be great, God you are still good.
